The teaching of a world studies course entails the fostering of an ambience conducive to the breaking down of barriers between cultures. Such an environment also helps students and teachers to break away from a restrictive form of categorizing disciplines. The dual aim of the teaching of a world studies course does not, however, attempt to do away with all forms of specificity in favor of real or imagined universal characteristics. Rather, a world studies course, we believe, attempts to highlight differences and similarities in world cultures without glossing over the weaknesses of any particular text under scrutiny.
