Mar. 14--The uncertainty about who will own the St. Paul Pioneer Press isn't going away -- at least for a few more months. McClatchy Co., the owner of the Minneapolis-based Star Tribune, said Monday it is buying Pioneer Press parent Knight Ridder Inc. for $4.5 billion in cash and stock. But McClatchy has decided that the "for sale" sign will remain on the Pioneer Press and 11 other dailies in the 32-newspaper Knight Ridder chain, the nation's second-largest by circulation.
The initial deal brought concerns locally that McClatchy could shut down the Pioneer Press. Now the focus turns to who might be interested ...
