THIS MONTH, THE UNITED STATES Federal Reserve will put the new-design $10 note into circulation, the final note to be issued in a series of changes to US paper currency. It completes a process that the organisation began a decade ago in the hope that new-design dollar bills would protect the currency's reputation as a universally recognised store of wealth.

There is a lot at stake here because the US greatly benefits from the enormous quantities of dollar bills held in the US and overseas by governments and private individuals.
