The goal which Michael Posner set himself as editor of this book was 'to convey to a new generation of researchers what is currently known about the basic structure of cognitive science'. In view of this enormous escalation of theory and research falling within the general ambit of cognitive sciences, this is a goal which is extremely difficult to attain. However, Posner has probably come closer than anyone else to attaining it, and has also managed to convey the impression that cognitive science has finally 'come of age'.
