Lisa Garcia-Picaso, who was known for wearing cheery and colorful head scarves and hats, fought cancer "with the mightiness of a champion."
"She was determined to beat this unwelcome intrusion in her life," her colleague Mildred Duran wrote in an e-mail. Even when the disease reappeared after several years of remission, she "rebounded" and fought again.
Mrs. Garcia-Picaso died Feb. 22, a day before her 45th birthday. She'd been fighting cancer since 2002.
"She was my hero and the bravest person I know," said Patricia Garcia, her oldest sister, holding back tears.
