Mar. 15--The 60 Minutes stopwatch won't have Mike Wallace to tick around anymore.
Wallace, whose name has become synonymous with the groundbreaking newsmagazine he helped launch almost 38 years ago, will step down as a regular correspondent at the end of the season in May.
"I'm almost 88, for God's sake. The time has come," Wallace said in an interview yesterday. (His birthday is May 9.)
"When it becomes a real pain in the back to travel a lot; when your hearing and your memory aren't what they used to be, you're not as well prepared or qualified to do the job. Little by little, you try to be sensible about it."
