Richard Brown, the city manager of New London, Connecticut, writing in the December 2005 issue of PM magazine, has given us a partial explanation of "How eminent domain became a hot-button issue" in his article "Eminent Domain: New London's Story." Another part of the explanation though is how the United States Supreme Court's decision in Kelo v. City of New London was reported--or rather misreported--by the press.
Typical of the reporting, then and since, was this line from the Associated Press story on June 23, the day the decision was released: "As a result, cities now have wide power to bulldoze residences for projects such as shopping malls and hotel ...
