The make-up of the Brazil delegation to the funeral of Pope John Paul II attracted some attention. Not only were representatives of politics and of the Catholic church invited to take part but also representatives of the various religions and churches making up the religious spectrum of Brazil: a Muslim, a Jew, a Lutheran pastor and a priestess (mae de santo) of Brazil's African-syncretistic religion. (1) President Lula wanted to give expression to the diversity of religions that can be found in Brazil today. It certainly did that, leading the Brazilian cardinal to make the imprudent remark in an interview that Lula was not Catholic but chaotic.
