TRYPTOPHAN is one of the essential amino acids in swine diets. Tryptophan is generally supplied in an adequate amount from the ingredients used in most swine diets formulated for optimal performance. If the diet supplies excess tryptophan that is not used for the purpose of protein synthesis, it may be used as a therapeutic supplement.
There has been limited research conducted in the area of tryptophan nutrition and its effect on the behavior of swine. The therapeutic use of tryptophan is based on the fact that alterations in brain tryptophan levels can influence the synthesis of serotonin, an inhibiting neurotransmitter in the central nervous system.
