The Beaufort family has been fortunate in its biographers, first G.L. Harriss's Cardinal Beaufort (reviewed ante XXVI, 1991) and now, for his great-niece, the work under review. Margaret Beaufort is more lightly treated by the joint authors, one a master at Winchester College, itself a fourteenth-century foundation, the other archivist of St. John's College, Cambridge, Margaret's foundation left incomplete at her death in April 1509 - in the shadow of the coronation of her grandson, Henry VIII. But the scholarship remains impeccable as evidenced by the impressive range of manuscript sources and sustained critical awareness.
