Faced with opposition from Planned Parenthood in South Dakota and other organizations, a Wisconsin man claiming to represent an abortion-rights group said Wednesday that he would abandon an attempt to circulate petitions to refer South Dakota's recently passed abortion ban to a statewide vote.
The action Tuesday by Basic Abortion Rights Network of Waukesha, Wis., surprised and dismayed Planned Parenthood leaders, who have been mulling whether to seek a referendum vote or challenge the law in court.
