If girls' basketball coach Larry Krieg weren't retiring after this season, he joked, he might have fired himself. After all, he set up a brutal nonconference schedule that included Edina, Hopkins, Lakeville North, Rogers and St. Paul Central on top of the already rugged Northwest Suburban Conference slate.
But those five nonconference games - all losses - made the Elks (14-15) a tougher team in the playoffs, which is why they qualified for the Class 4A state tournament despite being a No. 5 seed in their section. They begin play against St. Paul Central at 10 a.m. today at Target Center.
