For a while, at least, the newspaper that St. Paul columnist Joe Soucheray calls "the enemy paper" could legally become the Pioneer Press' big brother.
On Monday the Star Tribune's parent, McClatchy Co., announced an agreement to buy Knight Ridder Inc., which owns the Pioneer Press. Because of potential antitrust issues and McClatchy's need to raise cash to pay for its purchase, the company said that the Pioneer Press will immediately go on the auction block along with 11 other Knight Ridder newspapers.
For Pioneer Press employees, the news that the paper remained for sale - just by a different owner - failed ...
