PHOENIX _ Before Team USA plays its third game in the World Baseball Classic on Friday, it could be eliminated from the competition.
Welcome to the unpredictable and somewhat bizarre world of international baseball tie-breakers.
In a stunning turn of events, Team USA fell behind by eight runs and lost to Canada, 8-6, Wednesday, at Chase Field, putting the host team (1-1) in the dangerous position of having to rely on another outcome in the Pool B bracket.
"Everybody feels like they got kicked in the stomach," said USA manager Buck Martinez. "This team has a lot of pride. This was a tough day."
