Mar. 7--Long Island business owners report their confidence in the local economy has dropped to its lowest point since 1996 although many plan to expand their operations during the coming year, according to a recent opinion poll.

Local executives rated the economy at 6.0, on a scale of 1 to 10, noting concerns about the high cost of housing in the region, fears of another terrorist attack, and a lack of vision and action from elected officials. The results were down from the 6.7 rating in the previous two years.
