Mar. 7--BMW's 4,500 Spartanburg County employees got a little extra in their paychecks last Friday -- an 8.5 percent bonus.
Last month, the automaker confirmed that it would be paying a bonus, but it declined to reveal the amount until after workers received the money.
This year's amount was slimmer than the 10 percent that workers received the previous three years, but it also comes at a time when the auto industry overall is struggling.
"We are very pleased, with the condition of the automobile industry, that we are able to pay a nice bonus," BMW spokeswoman Bunny Richardson said.
