Mar. 7--NORFOLK -- The .500 record wasn't an issue. Nor were losses in seven of his last nine games.
Cynthia J. Watson, principal at Booker T. Washington High, still had a good feeling about this Darren Sanderlin fellow.
She noticed she had a meeting in Richmond at the same time as the 2003 Group AAA state basketball semifinals. So she invited her then-first-year coach to join her, to experience the excitement and pageantry of the high school final four -- and perhaps plant a seed or two.
