Health Care: Advertising ban at crux of consumer dispute

The Federal Trade Commission and the California Dental Association are embroiled in a dispute that has both claiming the role of consumer protector.

The FTC charged the dental association this month with illegally restricting competition among its 15,000 members by prohibiting some types of advertising. Those practices "deprive consumers of truthful information important to them in selecting a dentist," according to the FTC complaint.
