Alcohol is the most commonly used substance by insomniacs, despite the variety of sleep medications available. But as Stanford sleep specialist Rafael Pelayo points out: 'nobody is proud to take sleeping tablets.' Addiction is a real possibility and overdoses have been fatal. But changes are afoot.
