Gilding, the process of applying a thin layer of real or imitation gold to a surface, is an ancient art that dates back to early Egyptian and Oriental civilizations. Popular also in Greece and Rome, gilding can be applied to wood, metal, ivory, leather, paper, porcelain, glass and even fabrics and commonly adorns such pieces as picture frames, mirrors, furniture and architectural elements.
