Mar. 21--JEROME -- Even as a teenager, the moment Donald Rupert saw a fire truck he jumped at the chance to join in the action.

"If it had wheels and he could get to it, he would go out and help if he could," said his son Dan.

Rupert died March 11. He was 77. Firefighting and serving the public was a passion that stayed with him his whole life.

At 14, Rupert worked at a gas station and in 1953 bought one of his own called Don's Conoco. In 1948, he married Wilma Shropshire, whom he met at the Moose Hall. From then on, they shared a love for dancing and belonged to several clubs.
