Mar. 22--Waukesha -- When school crossing guard Jose Espinosa saw a car bearing down on him and 10-year-old Dalia Mendez, he had few choices.
Espinosa chose courage. The 79-year-old Waukesha man put himself between the speeding car and Mendez. He took the full force of the blow and suffered two broken legs. On Tuesday, Espinosa walked slowly to the front of the Common Council Chambers to receive a Citizen Service Award from Mayor Carol Lombardi and Police Chief Leslie Sharrock and a standing ovation from aldermen and audience members.
