ONE MUST HAVE THE HIGHEST RESPECT and admiration for John McGahern. He has to date accomplished an oeceuvre that, in the context of postwar Irish fiction, has few equals. His main concern, he never tires to emphasize, is with good writing and only to a second or third degree with good Irish writing.
