Hotels in Van Buren (Crawford County) had a 10.5 percent jump in sales from $2.88 million in 2004 to $3.18 million in 2005, according to the Van Buren Advertising & Promotion Commission, which collects a 1 percent tax on hotels and prepared food.
Van Buren's 57 restaurants and convenience stores brought in $30.16 million in 2005, up 2.9 percent from $29.31 million the previous year.
A large part of the draw to Van Buren is historic downtown Main Street, said Maryl Koeth, director of advertising and promotions for the city. The oldest building on the block dates back to the 1840s, and many of the other buildings date back to the turn of the 20th century.
