Researchers at Purdue University have developed a portable mass spectrometer and are working on ways to equip it with an ionization method for rapid analysis of different chemicals for uses such as bomb, disease and drug detection.
The mini mass spectrometer weighs 22 pounds, about 30 times less than a conventional mass spectrometer, including a battery pack. That means the system can be taken into the field for sampling rather than having the samples brought to the lab for analysis which is typically the case now with mass spectrometers.
