INVESTORS in tax-efficient Isas are sitting on a [pounds sterling]1.4 billion tax time-bomb which only the Chancellor, who makes his Budget speech today, can defuse.

In his Budget last year the Chancellor said savers would be able to contribute to Isas until April 2010 - but he did not make it clear whether those investments will remain tax-free after this date.

Any change to the current regime could have a devastating impact on millions of investors.

Many use Isas as a form of pension saving because they hope to be able to draw a tax-free income when they retire.
