Mercedes-Benz and BMW are bringing a new generation of gasoline direct injection engines to market.
The German premium carmakers are following Audi, which already offers gasoline direct injection engines and has ambitious goals for the technology.
Mercedes and BMW are optimistic that new technology will solve some of the problems that stopped previous-generation gasoline injection engines from being successful. They believe the technology will improve fuel economy.
