A new generation of portable computer is adding speed and flexibility to the testing of electronically controlled vehicle systems at Ford Motor Co. plants.
The hand-held devices, developed by Mahle Powertrain Inc., run a variety of tests, including checking a vehicle's fuel system, ignition system, idle speed control, evaporative emissions system, antilock brakes, lighting and information-entertainment systems.
The devices are used by Ford technicians at the end of assembly lines. They plug into the car's on-board diagnostic system. Vehicles that fail are taken to a repair area.
