So, we're watching ``24'' the other night. Few things bond a family like watching an hourlong weekly myocardial infarction with terrorists, sweat and Kiefer Sutherland's intensity as agent Jack Bauer, the most dismally unlucky man in television history.

More bad things happen to Jack _ that's the plot line for every episode _ when up pops a commercial for Fidelity Investments retirement services. Network television has become an endless retirement commercial, as well as a chem lab of prescription drugs for aging woes, a reminder that young people have abandoned the premises for more zippy media.
