Anthrax is a potent and often fatal endosporic bacterial infection, making it an ideal biological weapon. Upon entering the body, spores germinate within macrophages and the live bacteria produce multiple toxins. One of these is lethal toxin (made of lethal factor and protective antigen), which has been postulated to cause overproduction of inflammatory cytokines IL-1, IL-6 and TNF-alpha(Tumor Necrosis Factor).
