SAN DIEGO - Japan needed an assist from the U.S. to get to the championship game of the World Baseball Classic. It needed a clutch hit from Ichiro Suzuki to ignite a big inning.
Nursing a one-run lead, Suzuki, the Seattle Mariners star, hit a one-out, run-scoring single to right field to give Japan some breathing room, and pinch-hitter Kosuke Fukudome followed with a two-run single to left and a one-run game turned into a rout.
Japan went on to a 10-6 victory on Monday in front of 42,696 at Petco Park.
