Mar. 23--EL MONTE -- For a brief moment in the 1950s, El Monte had a chance to make the Dodgers its hometown team, according to Mayor Ernie Gutierrez.
At a recent City Council meeting where two athletic organizations pitched moving their operations to El Monte, Gutierrez said the city should maybe look more closely at adopting sports teams.
One, a basketball team, claims to have at least 8 million fans, and the other -- a roller hockey team -- is offering to build a sports complex in the city.
