Since it was established as Mutual Telephone Co. in 1883, GTE Hawaiian Tel has always been on the cutting edge of communications technology. In 1910, Honolulu became one of the first cities in the world to use dial-telephone service. The company was renamed Hawaiian Telephone Co. in 1954. Soon after, other milestone took place. The island of Hawaii, for example, became the nation's largest toll-free calling area by 1960.

The company became a wholly owned subsidiary of General Telephone & Electronics (GTE) in 1967. That partnership has spawned many advancements such as the establishment of the new national GTE Technology Development and Marketing Center in Honolulu. ...
