Global sea levels could rise much faster than scientists had anticipated if current warming trends continue, speeding the melting of the polar ice sheets, Colorado and Arizona researchers have concluded.
Arctic summers could be as warm by 2100 as they were 130,000 years ago, a balmy period that led to sea levels up to 20 feet higher than today's, the researchers say.
Unless emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping "greenhouse" gases are curbed, sea levels could rise up to 3 feet by the end of this century and up to 20 feet in 500 years, the researchers report in a pair of papers in today's ...
