The landscape to your left is a physical and psychological response to the environment: emotional, spiritual and expressionistic. The colors are garishly hot, and the thick paint is applied with obvious brushstrokes. There is something primordial about the scene, as though this place is just beginning to take form for the first time.
Artist Marsden Hartley (1877-1943) positions three trapezoidal, volcano-like mountains almost in the center of the canvas.
