Red Hat said in a webcast from San Francisco Tuesday attended by Intel, AMD and NetApp that it was going to tightly integrate the open source-developed Xen virtualization widgetry into its commercial operating system by the end of the year, a move that's not entirely unexpected.
It's coming in a bit late in the day trying to prevent VMware from becoming a "critical franchise" to its customers, according to Illuminata principal analyst Jonathan Eunice. Even if it puts Xen in its Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) distro, it's still going to have to support VMware, Eunice said, and VMware will bring in more money.
