IN THE blue black hours before dawn, I boarded the first train of the morning and headed into the city.
Blackbirds, song thrush, dunnocks, wrens and robins joined the swelling dawn chorus as we pulled away from the station, despite driving rain and an icy wind.
The rain ran down the carriage windows as I rattled into Liverpool, but I didn't care - in my mind I was out on the mudflats and salt-marshes of the Mersey Estuary, courtesy of a great little book that came out this month.
I was engrossed in the third edition of The Mersey Estuary, produced by the Mersey Estuary Conservation Group.
