HEALTH experts today hit back at a controversial study which suggested that eating oily fish may not cut the risk of heart disease, strokes or cancer.

The report in the British Medical Journal found little evidence of the benefit of omega 3 fatty acids, which are found in mackerel and fresh tuna as well as supplements and some plant oils.

However, one of Britain's leading health charities today warned that more than 20 years of research has shown there is a wide range of benefits from fish oils, and dozens of studies that have proved its effectiveness should not be ignored.
