Mar. 26--Bird flu. It's a menace ready to turn our chickens into disease-spreading monsters that will spark a flu outbreak capable of killing half of everyone who gets it. Bird flu. It will probably infect some birds in North America this year, but there's no reason to panic about a pandemic. Relax, and pass the chicken, please. So, who's right?
Well, both views have some truth. A dangerous flu strain is coming. Someday. The difficulty in spreading that message is that health officials have no idea how bad it will be or when it will occur.
