LAUREL DANIEL, who has died, aged 89, in a high-care nursing home in Melbourne following a stroke, had an enviable place in cinematographic history.
As the wife of Dr Dickie Daniel, official physician to the stars of Sir David Lean's epic multi-Oscar-winning war film, The Bridge on the River Kwai, she not only became friendly with the stars, Sir Alec Guinness, William Holden and Jack Hawkins, but also witnessed at close hand the dramatic dynamiting of the Bridge, a fitting climax to the film.
"Quite amazing," she later recalled.
