The Canadian Shield (or just the "Shield") is composed of ancient rock formations and is the most prominent geological feature underlying the central and northern portion of Canada. For the most part, the Shield is a geologically tortured, little-weathered portion of the earth's crust that has helped shape the character and economy of Canada for the past approximately 150 years.
