PETE, are you OK to drive?" I ask, as Pete Doherty guns his vintage Jaguar through the dawn-deserted streets of north London and on to the M1, tearing along at 100mph.
"You joking? I'm wide awake," he insists, looking at me through puppy-dog eyes. He downs a pint of milk and, with one hand on the wheel, turns to look on the floor and in the back seat, maniacally searching for his lighter. I point out that he's been up all night, that he looks wasted - slack-jawed, mussed hair, filthy hands - and ask him to let me take the wheel.
