Mar. 27--An activist group that considers caffeine a "destructive" and "ubiquitous" drug said it has recruited the city of Charleston this year in its efforts to cut into the sales of Starbucks, Coca-Cola and other peddlers of the popular and legal stimulant.

The Caffeine Awareness Alliance, a nonprofit organization, said the Holy City is among 17 municipalities large and small that have signed proclamations "declaring March as National Caffeine Awareness Month to call attention to the dangers of caffeine dependency and intoxication."

The campaign also has garnered the support of governors of five states. South Carolina is not among them.
