NEW YORK -- The weakness of the hair-growth products category has not deterred Procter & Gamble Co. (P&G) from investing in the market's future.

Sales in the category slid 9.1% to $53.6 million in drug, food and discount outlets (excluding Wal-Mart Stores Inc.) in the year ended January 22, according to Information Resources Inc. Unit volume tumbled 10.1% to 1.93 million.

Nonetheless P&G Pharmaceuticals last year entered into an exclusive agreement with drug company Curis Inc. to evaluate and develop potential treatments for hair-growth regulation utilizing Curis' hedgehog agonist technology.
