Despite mounting concerns that a national consolidation in the telecom sector will leave consumers with just two providers of broadband service--the local phone and cable companies--competition in New York City is alive and well.

While companies such as AT&T--which recently announced it will snap up rival Bell South for $67 billion--bet that bulk will give them an insurmountable edge, the sheer size of the New York City market dictates another reality.
