Mar. 30--The Master Plan Resource Committee, the group of business leaders formed to advocate keeping the Smith County Jail downtown, announced on Thursday that it formally opposes both propositions for a new jail that will appear on the May 13 ballot.
In an editorial board meeting with the Tyler Morning Telegraph, the group also presented three less-expensive alternatives that it says will meet the county's needs without overbuilding. Those plans would produce 1,301 to 1,601 beds total, and range in cost from $39.1 million to $57.6 million.
