Town gas was introduced to Tunis in 1870 by the French colonial authorities, but it was on a very small scale. The first gas distribution system was built in 1955, as the small Jebel Abderrahman gas field was developed. Associated gas from el-Borma oilfield was first utilised in 1972 for LPG production and other uses.

The first 12 BCM/year phase of the TransMed gas pipeline from Algeria to Italy, passing through Tunisia, began supplying the local market in 1983, and its second phase was completed in 1994.
