Apr. 2--Nearly six months have passed since the federal Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act took effect in October 2005, and the number of bankruptcies in New Mexico is down substantially.
There were 156 bankruptcies filed this February, compared to 838 a year ago at the same time -- an 81 percent decrease, according to case statistics for New Mexico. At first glance, the numbers would suggest the law has succeeded in one of its main purposes, which was to discourage people from filing for bankruptcy and encourage people to pay off their debts.
