The bid by Belgian shipping freight firm Sea-Invest to take joint control of Dutch port venture EMO-EKOM could impede effective competition, the European Commission hinted when it announced on 31 March that it had opened an in-depth inquiry into the planned takeover under the EU Merger Regulation. Both companies are cargo-handling companies mainly active in the loading, unloading and storage of iron ore and coal. Sea Invest is active in a number of ports in Belgium, France, Germany and South Africa.
