Apr. 5--Newfangled technology met old-fashioned human pluck at the Gorillaz concert Sunday night. When the technology failed - quite completely - the humans rose to the occasion. Gorillaz are an animated or "virtual" band of four apish cartoon characters drawn by Jamie Hewlett, illustrator of the comic book "Tank Girl." Their dark, hip-hop-inflected music comes courtesy of Damon Albarn, onetime singer for the British band Blur. Gorillaz have sold millions of albums, but Sunday's show, the first of a five-night run at the Apollo Theater, was supposed to answer a burning question: How would this imaginary band play a real concert? ...
